The city of Sanford, North Carolina is located directly in the middle of the Tar Heel State. It is the seat of government for Lee County and boasts a population of over 25,000 residents. Sanford is a historical town and is located exactly where the beaches of the Atlantic Coast comes in touch with the mountains and the Piedmont clay. Sanford is a well known industrial town. Their biggest claim to fame came back in 1959, when the city of Sanford was proclaimed as 'Brick Capital USA'. At the time, Sanford was producing over 10 percent of the bricks used in the United States. General Shale and Lee Brick Company still operate in town. Another great thing about Sanford, North Carolina is its close proximity to larger metro areas such as Raleigh/Durham, Greensboro, and Fayetteville. Recently, Sanford has gone into the burgeoning Bio-tech industry with the additon of Wyeth Chemicals to Lee County and Sanford.
